Star anise (Illicium verum) is very similar in flavour to anise (Pimpinella anisum). However, it is not an herb like anise. Star anise seeds are fruit of a tree that originally grows in Vietnam and South-West China, but is nowadays cultivated throughout almost all of Asia. Star anise has a sweet, warm liquorice-like flavour. This is caused by the substance Anethol, which is also found in aniseed and fennel.
