Coriander comes from the Coriandrum sativum plant and is related to parsley, carrots, and celery. It is also referred to as Chinese parsley. Coriander leaves are often used whole, whereas the seeds are used dried or ground. It is a fragrant herb that is extensively used throughout the world wherever a distinctive pungency is required. It has many culinary uses: in curries, dhals, masalas and chutneys in India; in kebabs , meatballs and stir fries in the Middle East; and in salsas in South America.  The root has a more intense flavour than the leaves and can be used in curry pastes. The leaves make a good garnish. Coriander is in fact considered to be one of the most important herbs of Indian cuisine. The seeds look like tiny, pale, creamy – brown peppercorns.

Coriander offers several health benefits. Its seeds, extract, and oils may assist with lowering blood sugar. In fact, studies suggest that the seeds promote enzyme activity that helps remove sugar from the blood. Coriander is also laden in antioxidants which in turn promote immunity, and combat cancer and inflammation. Some studies also suggest that coriander may lower heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure and the bad cholesterol (LDL). Due to it’s diuretic properties, it helps flush out excess sodium and water from the body. Coriander has also been found to reduce unpleasant digestive symptoms like bloating and discomfort often experienced by people with IBS.
