Uva ursi, also known as bearberry is an evergreen shrub that produces red berries and flourishes in alpine forests in many regions. Bears are said to be fond of the shiny, bright red or pink fruit, which is edible, but sour tasting. In fact, the Latin name uva ursi literally translates to “bear’s grapes.”
The leaves have been used medicinally since the 2nd century before the discovery of antibiotics. Native Americans used it as a remedy for urinary tract infections and kidney stones. Prior to the discovery of sulfa drugs and antibiotics, uva ursi was a common treatment for bladder-related infections.
Researchers have discovered that uva ursi’s ability to fight infection is due to the natural chemicals arbutin and glycosides. Glycosides might help reduce the bacteria in your urine. Your body transforms glycosides into hydroquinone, a compound with antibacterial properties.
Today, uva ursi is sometimes used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) and cystitis (bladder inflammation). Further research in this field is required. However, some studies have shown that combining uva ursi with dandelion root and leaf, help prevent recurrent UTIs. Uva ursi has also been used topically (to the surface of the skin) because it chemically produces hydroquinone, which is a substance that is used in skin lightening creams.
