Pure Liquorice root pieces ideal for brewing
    8.00

    Certified Organic MT01-ORG-01 CO44

Liquorice is the root of a plant that is native to the Mediterranean and Western Asia. It is cultivated in many parts of the world, including Russia, where it is particularly popular. When cut, the root is bright yellow with a sweet smell and tastes strongly of anise, with a rather bitter-sweet flavour.

The uses of liquorice are widespread, but it is best known as an ingredient in confectionery, and in the making of the famous Irish stout Guinness, as well as other beers and soft drinks.

The consumption of liquorice tea has recently gained popularity. Research indicates several potential health benefits and medicinal properties associated with its consumption, dating back also to the ancient Egyptians, who converted the root into a sweet beverage for pharaohs. Nowadays, liquorice is commonly used as a remedy for gastrointestinal discomfort and acid-reflux, assists with the treatment of sore throats, and may help reduce irritated, inflamed, and itchy skin caused by eczema. Liquorice root also contains powerful flavonoids and antioxidants which protect against infection, with recent studies suggesting a moderate consumption of liquorice to assist with the treatment of gum disease and help in the prevention of cavities.

Although liquorice is a herb which has been used for thousands of years in the treatment of a variety of ailments, it should not be consumed in excessive amounts, particularly by individuals suffering from high blood pressure or low potassium levels. Pregnant women too are advised to seek medical advice prior to the consumption of liquorice root.

Warning: People suffering from hypertension or low potassium levels should avoid excessive consumption.

    Ingredients: 100% Juniper Berries, whole

    Origin: Hungary

Juniper berries are a member of the cypress family. They have been popular in Hungary and southern Europe where the trees are particularly widespread. They are classed as a spice and are considered to be a valued seasoning for game, venison, duck, rabbit, pork, ham and lamb. The berries can be used in savoury dishes, serving as an excellent flavouring in meat pates and terrines, as well as in sweet dishes such as cakes. They can be eaten fresh or dried, whole or ground, raw or cooked. The spice is most famously used to give gin its distinctive flavour due to the main flavour compound pinene which gives the pine tree its distinct scent.

Juniper berries have a long history of traditional use, treating a range of discomforts such as kidney and urinary tract infections, digestive issues, gout, warts and skin growths. Their antiseptic properties were well known amongst early civilizations. In medieval times, Juniper was used to ward off witchcraft and black magic. Its aromatic smoke was used for ritual purification. Egyptian papyrus dating back to 1500 BCE refers to the medicinal use of Juniper Berries in the treatment of tapeworm infestations. The Romans also used the berries for purification and stomach ailments.

Given the above, however, there is limited scientific research and laboratory studies to date pointing towards benefits of its consumption. Junipers have nonetheless been found to be rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals, protecting the body from free radical damage.  Some research points at Juniper as being a powerful diuretic, helping to cleanse the system of excess fluids and stimulating the kidneys. Juniper Berries contain bitter compounds that stimulate bile flow and the production of digestive enzymes. This allows the body to breakdown foods more easily and enhances nutrient absorption. Due to their astringent properties, they have been found to be effective at relieving heartburn and other digestive upsets. Juniper Berries are sometimes referred to as “Nature’s Insulin”, with some studies showing that it contains natural insulin that can work in the body just like its pharmaceutical counterpart.

Disclaimer: Since all medicinal uses remain unproven, juniper berries should not be used in the treatment of any ailment. Please consult your healthcare professional if you are taking any other prescription medications before its use.

Yerba Maté is known for its stimulating properties due to its caffeine content, but it also contains various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

It has a slightly bitter and earthy flavor that can be an acquired taste for some. Many people enjoy drinking mate not only for its taste and energy-boosting effects but also for its cultural significance and the social aspect of sharing it with others.

For the perfect maté tea, first moisten the leaves with lukewarm water. Then let the moistened maté steep for about 20 seconds so that the leaves swell as much as possible. In the final step, infuse the wet leaves with hot water.

Traditionally, maté is drunk with a straw (bombilla) out of a hollowed bottle gourd (calebasse). However, its earthy flavour also comes into its own in the classic tea cup.

The name Chamomile comes from the Greek word meaning ‘ground apple’. Its history dates back at least to ancient Egypt, where Chamomile tea was prescribed as a cold remedy. The Romans enjoyed it as a beverage, as well as an incense. Ironically, the name ‘Roman Chamomile’ by which it is sometimes known, does not stem from this time. It rather comes from an arbitrary naming of the herb in the 19th Century by a botanist who happened to find some growing in the Roman Coliseum.

Herbal teas: Dried orange leaves can be used as an ingredient in herbal tea blends. They impart a mild, citrusy flavor and aroma to the infusion, adding a refreshing element to the tea. Orange leaf tea is known for its calming properties and is often enjoyed for relaxation.

Culinary uses: While not as common as other citrus leaves like lime or lemon, dried orange leaves can occasionally be used in cooking. They can be added to marinades, sauces, or stews to infuse a subtle citrus essence into the dish. However, it’s worth noting that the culinary use of orange leaves is not as widespread as the use of the fruit itself.

Smoking or grilling: In some cultures, dried orange leaves are used for smoking or grilling meat or fish. The leaves are added to the fire or coals, creating aromatic smoke that can infuse a unique flavor into the food.

A delightfully bright morning cup with citrusy Ceylon tea coupled with the malty underscore of a piquant Assam. A seamless marriage! Serve with milk or lemon.
    From: 12.00

Our Morning Tune Blend is made up of two very popular black teas: Assam and Ceylon. Assam is the world’s largest tea-growing region, lying on either side of the Brahmaputra River, and bordering Bangladesh and Burma (Myanmar). Assam has a tropical climate, heavily influenced by the monsoons and without the normal hot and dry season found in the rest of India. In the warmest month, the temperature is around 30ºC, while in January, roughly 15ºC is the norm. The most prised Assams are the second flush teas, coming right before the monsoons, with a rich, spicy and malty flavour.

Teas harvested during and right after the rainy season tend to be softer and more floral in character.

The tiny island of Sri Lanka is the world’s third largest producer of tea, due in part to the fact that tea can be harvested year-round here. The island is blessed with perfect trade winds and striking geography, creating unique micro-climates favourable to tea production. Tea flavour is very much tied to the altitude where it grows here: low, medium or high, each with its own sought-after character. Low-grown teas are hearty, tangy and very rich in taste. High-grown teas are much lighter bodied, but are more aromatic and sweet. Mid-grown are a combination of the two, depending on exact conditions. Medium to full body with noticeable unique aromatics.

A bright and fruity Ceylon blended with the earthy and aromatic sweet flavours of the Maltese carob. East meets west with success. Add milk or Maltese honey for extra indulgence.
    From: 12.00

Tgħanniqa is a unique Maltese tea blend with carob pods blended with a strong Ceylon black tea. Carob comes from a sweet evergreen tree that is grown heavily in the Maltese country roads and other Mediterranean countries.

Our Maltese generations of old used carob as a healthy beverage to boost their immune system, sooth sore throats and coughs on a rainy day and aid digestion.

Carobs were a staple diet with early civilizations, with archeological findings indicating that  early Egyptians used carobs as a natural sweetener.

Carobs have also been called St. John’s bread or locust bean because the pods were once thought to have been the “locusts” that were eaten by John the Baptist in the Wilderness.

That story was apparently wrong, as the prophet actually ate migratory locust.

It is also hinted that early jewellers and goldsmiths in the Middle East used to weigh gold and gemstones against the seeds of the carob tree.

A Carob pod takes between 11 to 12 months to develop and ripen. By then the seeds are bursting with complex sweet and aromatic flavours that provide  a hint of chocolate and earthy root herbs. Characterised by a rich, deep red colour, this special tea blend provides a delicate balance of  sweet and savoury indulgence all in one steamy cup.

Indian chai meets South African rooibos. An explosion of masala spices with a decisive sweet-tangy flavour. With the added vanilla, this is truly a hearty cuppa.
    From: 12.00

Historically, tea in India was viewed as a herbal medicine, rather than as a beverage for taste. Some chai spice blends still in current use are derived from Ayurvedic medical texts. Popular spices include anise, cinnamon, clove, cardamom, peppercorn and ginger. Traditional preparation actually calls for the spices, milk and leaves to be simmered over sustained heat, rather than steeped in preheated. In India, chai is served in little clay cups from chai carts. After enjoying your tea, the cups are shattered on the ground and allowed to compost – an earth-friendly alternative to paper or plastic cups.

Our earthy rooibos is complimented perfectly with the rich, warm and soothing vanilla fragrance. Comforting indeed!
    From: 12.00

South African Rooibos requires solid soil preparation, good plant material, rainfall, and ability to make a good quality Rooibos based on harvesting skills and traditions. Rooibos tea is well known for a number of benefits namely to aid nagging headaches, insomnia, asthma, eczema, bone weakness, hypertension, allergies, and premature aging.

The story of vanilla begins with the Totonaco Indians of Mexico, who were the first to unearth its secret. They fell to the Aztecs, who were in turn soon conquered by the Spaniards, under the leadership of Harnando Cortez. Cortez brought his precious plunder, including a few beans of vanilla, back to Spain. Vanilla beans are the fruit of an orchid, which blooms for only one day each year. Because of this, and also because the flowers must be hand-pollinated, vanilla is the second most expensive spice on earth, after saffron.

This golden herb will always be a favourite with its calming effect and sweet floral finish. Serve with honey for extra sweetness.

This is the authentic Masala Chai Tea! A much-loved Indian tea combines Ceylon black tea with warm spices. This is the closest you can get to the original Indian Chai. Add hot milk and demarera sugar for a sweet indulgent chai!

This distinguished Oolong is known for its abundance of floral and fruity notes and more prominently its tempting scent of sweet milk
    From: 12.00

Formosa, meaning ‘beautiful island’, is what Dutch traders called Taiwan. The teas grown here, mainly north of Taipei, continue to be called as such. Tea can be harvested up to six times a year here, although the high mountain teas may be only twice a year. Oolong tea had been a very important export for the island until the 1980’s, when tea growers turned their focus to native oolong enthusiasts. Today, oolong tea is mainly produced for tea lovers in Taiwan, and the rarest, most prized lots are extremely difficult to find in the West. Tea culture is so alive and well in Taiwan, annual competitions are held amongst tea growing districts to reward the most outstanding oolongs each year. Gold medal winning oolongs are some of the most expensive in the world.
