Ingredients: 100% Uva Ursi Leaf

Origin: Spain

Uva ursi, also known as bearberry is an evergreen shrub that produces red berries and flourishes in alpine forests in many regions. Bears are said to be fond of the shiny, bright red or pink fruit, which is edible, but sour tasting. In fact, the Latin name uva ursi literally translates to “bear’s grapes.”

The leaves have been used medicinally since the 2nd century before the discovery of antibiotics. Native Americans used it as a remedy for urinary tract infections and kidney stones. Prior to the discovery of sulfa drugs and antibiotics, uva ursi was a common treatment for bladder-related infections.

Researchers have discovered that uva ursi’s ability to fight infection is due to the natural chemicals arbutin and glycosides. Glycosides might help reduce the bacteria in your urine. Your body transforms glycosides into hydroquinone, a compound with antibacterial properties.

Today, uva ursi is sometimes used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) and cystitis (bladder inflammation). Further research in this field is required. However, some studies have shown that combining uva ursi with dandelion root and leaf, help prevent recurrent UTIs. Uva ursi has also been used topically (to the surface of the skin) because it chemically produces hydroquinone, which is a substance that is used in skin lightening creams. Hydroquinone is prescribed for the treatment of dark skin patches that develop due to skin damage.

Brewing preparation: 1 teaspoon for 10 minutes in boiling water.

Disclaimer: Uva ursi is considered relatively safe for adults taking low doses by mouth for a short period of time, not longer than five days. However, always consult with your doctor prior to its use. Children, pregnant or lactating women, people with high blood pressure, Crohn’s disease, digestive problems, kidney or liver disease, or ulcers, should not take uva ursi as it may have potential side effects.

Ingredients: 100% Ground Cloves.

Origin: Madagascar

The name cloves comes from the Latin word clavus (a nail), because of the appearance of the dried, unopened flower buds. Cloves are native in South-east Asia, but they are now widely grown in the tropical climates of the Caribbean, Indonesia, Malaysia, Madagascar, Tanzania and Sri Lanka. They are picked when the pink buds are small, before the purple or crimson flowers develop. The buds change to a darker brown as they slowly dry up in the sun. Cloves have a sweet, pungent flavour and aroma. They can be quite bitter, but the heat of cooking tempers their flavour.

Cloves are included in many classic spice mixtures and in numerous Indian and Asian curry powders. They are also used in European spice mixtures for mulling wine. Cloves have an affinity with apples and are added whole or ground to apple puddings, pies, tarts and sauces. Ground cloves are used to spice rich cakes, biscuits and gingerbreads .

Cloves provide some impressive health benefits. They are an excellent source of beta-carotene, manganese, Vitamin K, and potassium. Cloves include multiple compounds that are linked to anti-inflammatory properties, such as eugenol which has been shown to reduce the risk of diseases such as arthritis. Eugenol is also a potent antioxidant, helping to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Cloves can also help protect the stomach from ulcers which are caused by thinning in the layers of mucus that protect the stomach lining. Studies show that cloves can thicken this mucus, lowering the risk of developing ulcers.  Cloves may also improve general liver function.

Cloves provide a significant amount of the mineral manganese. Manganese helps your body manage the enzymes that help repair your bones and produce hormones. Manganese can also act as an antioxidant that protects your body from free radicals.

Disclaimer: Eugenol can sometimes interact with medication, such as Warfarin. If you’re on blood-thinning medication, avoid consuming clove oil or clove tea. Cloves may also affect blood sugar levels. In people with diabetes, excessive amounts of eugenol can cause hypoglycemia. Please consult your healthcare professional if you are taking any other prescription medications before its use.

Ingredients: 100% Juniper Berries, whole

Origin: Hungary

Juniper berries are a member of the cypress family. They have been popular in Hungary and southern Europe where the trees are particularly widespread. They are classed as a spice and are considered to be a valued seasoning for game, venison, duck, rabbit, pork, ham and lamb. The berries can be used in savoury dishes, serving as an excellent flavouring in meat pates and terrines, as well as in sweet dishes such as cakes. They can be eaten fresh or dried, whole or ground, raw or cooked. The spice is most famously used to give gin its distinctive flavour due to the main flavour compound pinene which gives the pine tree its distinct scent.

Juniper berries have a long history of traditional use, treating a range of discomforts such as kidney and urinary tract infections, digestive issues, gout, warts and skin growths. Their antiseptic properties were well known amongst early civilizations. In medieval times, Juniper was used to ward off witchcraft and black magic. Its aromatic smoke was used for ritual purification. Egyptian papyrus dating back to 1500 BCE refers to the medicinal use of Juniper Berries in the treatment of tapeworm infestations. The Romans also used the berries for purification and stomach ailments.

Given the above, however, there is limited scientific research and laboratory studies to date pointing towards benefits of its consumption. Junipers have nonetheless been found to be rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals, protecting the body from free radical damage.  Some research points at Juniper as being a powerful diuretic, helping to cleanse the system of excess fluids and stimulating the kidneys. Juniper Berries contain bitter compounds that stimulate bile flow and the production of digestive enzymes. This allows the body to breakdown foods more easily and enhances nutrient absorption. Due to their astringent properties, they have been found to be effective at relieving heartburn and other digestive upsets. Juniper Berries are sometimes referred to as “Nature’s Insulin”, with some studies showing that it contains natural insulin that can work in the body just like its pharmaceutical counterpart.

Disclaimer: Since all medicinal uses remain unproven, juniper berries should not be used in the treatment of any ailment. Please consult your healthcare professional if you are taking any other prescription medications before its use.

Origin : Egypt

Certified Organic MT01-ORG-01 CO44

Spearmint, scientifically known as Mentha spicata, is a perennial herbaceous plant widely grown across Europe, China, India and Southern Asia, deriving its name from its pointed leaves which look like spears. Spearmint is a pleasant-smelling species of mint, having a similar aroma to that of peppermint, but sweeter in taste due to its lower menthol content. Since it is less pungent, it is more suited for the infusion of drinks and dishes. Spearmint is commonly used in health-food products, several hygiene products such as toothpastes and mouthwashes, cosmetics, and in medicine due to its claimed therapeutic properties.

Spearmint is considered to be one of the most popular and invigorating types of tisanes enjoyed globally. It is a powerhouse of various nutritional components, rich in essential nutrients, antioxidants, phenols and flavonoids. The health benefits associated with its consumption are endless. Studies indicate that this herb may help alleviate symptoms of nausea and indigestion, gas, headaches, toothaches, cramps and sore throats. When applied topically to the skin, it may help reduce swelling associated with nerve or muscle pain. Recent research indicates that spearmint extracts may also help with improved learning and memory, and reduced facial hair growth.

Warning: While Spearmint is considered to be a mild tisane, always consult a doctor or seek medical advice when in doubt.

Ingredients: 100% Organic Coriander

Origin: Italy

Certified Organic MT01-ORG-01 CO44

Coriander comes from the Coriandrum sativum plant and is related to parsley, carrots, and celery. It is also referred to as Chinese parsley. Coriander leaves are often used whole, whereas the seeds are used dried or ground. It is a fragrant herb that is extensively used throughout the world wherever a distinctive pungency is required. It has many culinary uses: in curries, dhals, masalas and chutneys in India; in kebabs , meatballs and stir fries in the Middle East; and in salsas in South America.  The root has a more intense flavour than the leaves and can be used in curry pastes. The leaves make a good garnish. Coriander is in fact considered to be one of the most important herbs of Indian cuisine. The seeds look like tiny, pale, creamy – brown peppercorns.

Coriander offers several health benefits. Its seeds, extract, and oils may assist with lowering blood sugar. In fact, studies suggest that the seeds promote enzyme activity that helps remove sugar from the blood. Coriander is also laden in antioxidants which in turn promote immunity, and combat cancer and inflammation. Some studies also suggest that coriander may lower heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure and the bad cholesterol (LDL). Due to it’s diuretic properties, it helps flush out excess sodium and water from the body. Coriander has also been found to reduce unpleasant digestive symptoms like bloating and discomfort often experienced by people with IBS.

Pure Liquorice root pieces ideal for brewing
8.00

Certified Organic MT01-ORG-01 CO44

Liquorice is the root of a plant that is native to the Mediterranean and Western Asia. It is cultivated in many parts of the world, including Russia, where it is particularly popular. When cut, the root is bright yellow with a sweet smell and tastes strongly of anise, with a rather bitter-sweet flavour.

The uses of liquorice are widespread, but it is best known as an ingredient in confectionery, and in the making of the famous Irish stout Guinness, as well as other beers and soft drinks.

The consumption of liquorice tea has recently gained popularity. Research indicates several potential health benefits and medicinal properties associated with its consumption, dating back also to the ancient Egyptians, who converted the root into a sweet beverage for pharaohs. Nowadays, liquorice is commonly used as a remedy for gastrointestinal discomfort and acid-reflux, assists with the treatment of sore throats, and may help reduce irritated, inflamed, and itchy skin caused by eczema. Liquorice root also contains powerful flavonoids and antioxidants which protect against infection, with recent studies suggesting a moderate consumption of liquorice to assist with the treatment of gum disease and help in the prevention of cavities.

Although liquorice is a herb which has been used for thousands of years in the treatment of a variety of ailments, it should not be consumed in excessive amounts, particularly by individuals suffering from high blood pressure or low potassium levels. Pregnant women too are advised to seek medical advice prior to the consumption of liquorice root.

Warning: People suffering from hypertension or low potassium levels should avoid excessive consumption.
